Hoover Notes will be sent out weekly to help you keep track of important school community news and events.  New items will be bolded. Links are blue.

PTA Action Items
  1. Join the PTA here.  We can't do this without you!  
  2. Link your Harris Teeter VIC card to the Together in Education program to earn money for Hoover.  Click here for more details.
  3. Stay up-to-date with PTA activities when you join the Hoover PTA Facebook Page.
  4. Contact Kimberly King, PTA President @ PresidentHooverPTA@gmail.com to find out how you can support the PTA's activities.  There are a number of Committee Chair positions open. To see a complete list, click here.  
  5. Donate to the Hoover Staff's Amazon Gift Registry.  Donations should be delivered to the "Gift Registry Address".
  6. Participate in the PTA fundraising Spirit Nights on 10/10 at Shake Shack (Cabin John) from 10:30 am - 9:30 pm, and 11/20 at Chipotle (Potomac Village).
  7. Plan on attending the first PTA General Membership Meeting on 10/10 at 7 pm.

  • Dr. Kim's September Message is available here.  Slides 42-44 have grade-specific highlights and activities, including Outdoor Education (6th), Finance Park (7th), and the 8th Grade Parent Tea.
  • Here is a list of non-athletic extracurricular activities for Fall 2023.  Students signed up during charge up on 9/28.  Club sponsors will contact all registered students in the near future with updates on their clubs.
  • Buy yearbooks here.  You can purchase Yearbook Recognition Ads. The flyer has more information.
  • Fall 2023 Family Portrait Day is on 10/9 from 9 am - 1 pm.
  • The HHMS NAACP Parents' Council is having their first meeting on 10/11 at 6 pm. The Parents’ Council is one of the vehicles created to empower African American and other minority parents to take a more proactive role in the education of their children. The purpose of the Parents’ Council is to provide a forum through which interested citizens may offer assistance, guidance, and support to African American parents and students of Montgomery County (Maryland) Public Schools (MCPS) to pursue the highest quality education possible through encouragement, information sharing, positive motivation, critical evaluation and advocacy.   • Hoover's Counseling Team is looking for parent volunteers to join the student led Hoover No Place for Hate Committee. The committee's mission is to join the Anti-Defamation League's No Place for Hate movement and create sustainable positive change at Hoover.  Its first task is to rally the school community together to sign the No Place for Hate Pledge.  Meetings will be held monthly on Wednesdays from 3:15-4:15 pm starting 10/11.  RSVP by 10/6 to Debbie Velasquez at 301-968-3750 or email Debra_M_Velasquez@mcpsmd.org.
  • The Bridge Program is requesting used Legos and Star Wars minifigures.  If you have donations, please contact Kimberly King, PTA President @ PresidentHooverPTA@gmail.com
  • Hoover's Theater Program is holding an interest meeting on 10/17 at 7 pm. The flyer is available here.
  • Winter registration for boys or girls' basketball opens 10/30 at noon. Spring registration for boys or girls' soccer opens 1/29/24 at noon.
MCPS Community News
  • MCPS Things to Know, September 28 provides information about Out-of-School Time activities, upcoming college fair, upcoming district events, and more.
  • Read the latest edition of MCPS QuickNotes, which includes a calendar of events and MCPS news and information.
  • MCPS' High School Regional/Countywide Application Programs opens in early October. Click here for information.  Two upcoming open houses for 8th grade students are:
    • Wheaton HS/Edison HS Regional Career Programs in Construction Management & Architecture, Healthcare Professions, Hospitality and Tourism Management, and Information Technology & Cyber Security will be held on 10/5 at 6:30 pm.  Parking is very limited.
    • The new 4-year program, the Walt Whitman HS Leadership Academy for Social Justice's open house is 10/5 at 7 pm in the Whitman High School Auditorium. RSVP for the event: https://forms.gle/uYVyLzC229Riwzj27.  
  • All MCPS families are invited to the Girls’ Summit on 10/21 at Clarksburg High School. RSVP here.
  • New this year, students may also apply to the Montgomery Virtual Academy (MVA) during the same application period as other special programs.  The MVA has a separate application which can be found in ParentVUE.               


Student Service Learning (SSL)

Student Service Learning is a Maryland state graduation requirement. 75 SSL hours are required to graduate.  For more information and SSL opportunities, visit the MCPS SSL page, the Montgomery County Volunteer Center's website, and the PTA's SSL page.  If you have questions, email Hoover's SSL Coordinator, Mrs. Triantis at Amalia_D_Triantis @mcpsmd.org.
