Hoover Notes will be sent out weekly to help you keep track of important school community news and events.  New items are bolded.  Links are blue.

PTA Action Items
  1. We're so happy that 180 students attended the PTA Halloween Party last Thursday!  Visit the PTA homepage for photos of the fun.
  2. The new PTA Safety Committee was successful in getting a second crossing guard on Tuckerman and is working with the Montgomery County Police to provide a safety assembly for students.  If you are interested in joining the committee, please contact Kimberly King at PresidentHooverPTA@gmail.com.
  3. Mark your calendar for the Hoover Book Fair the week of 11/6.  Students will visit the fair with their Language Arts Classes and can visit before school and during lunch.  A parent volunteer link, payment information, and other details will be sent out soon.
  4. Our Book Fair decorating contest this year is called Undercover Turkey. Students will create a turkey undercover as their favorite book character or part of a scene from their favorite book.  Click here for a few examples.  Entries should be dropped off at the Media Center and will be accepted the week of 11/6.  
  5. Let your student(s) know about the two opportunities to participate in the 2023-2024 National PTA Reflections Art Contest, "I Am Hopeful Because...": entering a theme idea for the 2025-2026 contest (due 11/3) and submitting art for this year's contest (due 11/17).  More details can be found on the PTA's website.
  6. The HHMS NAACP Parents' Council is having their second meeting on 11/7 at 7 pm. Future dates are listed here.  Contact Lauren Oxner, HHMS NAACP Parents' Council Representative at HMSNAACPREP@gmail.com with any questions.   7. Drop off extra Halloween candy in the PTA box in the Hoover main office by 11/10. 
  8. Participate in the next scheduled fundraising Spirit Nights on 11/20 at Chipotle (Potomac Village) and 12/6 at Ledo Pizza (Westlake Drive)
  9. Take a look at the Hoover Staff's Amazon Wishlist.  After school club sponsors have requested over 3,000 individual snacks!  Items should be delivered to the "Gift Registry Address". 
  10. Please consider sponsoring this year's Hoover directory by placing an ad for your business.  Advertising starts as low as $275. Please reach out to Stephanie Kempter from AtoZ Connect to reserve your spot.  
  11. Join the PTA here. We can't do this without you!  
  12. Link your Harris Teeter VIC card to the Together in Education program to earn money for Hoover.  Click here for more details.

  • Dr. Kim's October Message is available here.  
  • The Counseling Team will be providing different activities during MCPS' Mental Heath Awareness Week (10/30-11/3).
  • Winter registration for boys or girls' basketball opens today at noon.
  • The Media Center is looking for volunteers starting the week of 11/13. Here is the link to sign up.  Sign up is till the end of December. Volunteers will need to complete one module: Online "Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect Training" via your MCPS Classroom/Canvas Account. You can read the user guide here.  Questions?   • The 6th Grade Parent/Guardian Outdoor Ed meeting is scheduled for 12/6 from 7-8 pm on Zoom.  
  • Parents can sign up to volunteer at the 7th Grade Finance Park (1/22/23-1/24/23) here.

MCPS Community News
  • MCPS Things to Know, Thursday Oct. 26 provides information about safety tips, upcoming application due dates, mental health awareness week, upcoming events, and good news highlighting students, staff, and events. 
  • Read the latest edition of MCPS QuickNotes, which includes a calendar of events and MCPS news and information.
  • Provide feedback on the 2024-2025 MCPS Calendar here.
  • The deadline for applying to MCPS' High School Regional/Countywide Programs is Friday, November 3. Grade 8 students must use the High School Common Application available on ParentVUE.  Click here for more information.
  • New this year, students may also apply to the Montgomery Virtual Academy (MVA) during the same application period as other special programs.  The MVA has a separate application which can be found in ParentVUE.               
Student Service Learning (SSL)

Student Service Learning is a Maryland state graduation requirement. 75 SSL hours are required to graduate.  For more information and SSL opportunities, visit the MCPS SSL page, the Montgomery County Volunteer Center's website, and the PTA's SSL page.  If you have questions, email Hoover's SSL Coordinator, Mrs. Triantis at Amalia_D_Triantis @mcpsmd.org.


SSL Opportunity:  Grades 6 -12 students and families are invited to attend this year’s Changemaker Workshop to learn how to take action to improve their communities.  English: November 14, 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM; Spanish: November 15, 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM.  Students will earn 2 SSL hours for attending.
