Dear Hoover Families,

Happy October! The leaves are turning, our students are settling into their routines, and the calendar is filling up fast. This week is a busy one, with lots of chances to connect, support our school, and have some fun along the way. Here’s what you need to know:

We Need You: General Membership Meeting — Tuesday, October 13, 7 PM

Join us in the Media Center! We’ll vote to approve this year’s budget (quorum needed — your presence counts!), enjoy pizza, and hear from Katie Beckett on MCPS’s new regional high school programs. Dr. Kim will attend. Please review the attached May minutes; we’ll vote to approve them.

A Full Tuesday at Hoover

Our 8th grade parents are invited to the Parent Tea at 9:00 AM in the Media Center, and MATHCOUNTS tryouts are at 3:00 PM in the cafeteria. Our 8th graders take the PSAT on Wednesday. Please note there is no school for students on Friday, October 16 (Professional Day).

Spirit Night at Carmen’s — Wednesday, October 14

From 3–9 PM at Carmen’s Italian Ice in Cabin John Village Mall. Just mention Hoover at checkout and a portion of sales comes back to our school!

Save the Date: Halloween Dance — Friday, October 23

Join us 6–8 PM in the cafeteria for costumes, music, and raffles!

🏫 School Closure/Consolidation Study

• Round 1 public engagement meetings: Oct 19–Nov 2
• Round 2: Nov 30–Dec 10, including one at Hoover on Dec 1
• Superintendent’s recommendation expected February 2027; Board vote on April 15, 2027

📚 Middle School Program Changes — Delayed
The planned changes (60-minute core classes, streamlined electives) will not take effect this year.

📅 Proposed 2027–28 and 2028–29 School Calendars
Now open for public comment; final adoption expected November 19.

🍎 Curriculum Preview Day — Mon, Oct 19
Drop in 11:00 AM–1:00 PM or 5:00–7:00 PM at the Carver Educational Services Center cafeteria. Open to all K–12 families.

🎓 Fall High School Showcases — Oct 1–28
A great chance for 8th grade families to explore high school options!

🏛️ High School Center Programs (Regional Programs)

• Round 1 applications due Nov 6
• Zoom Q&A sessions: Nov 4–6, 6:30–7:30 PM

Extracurricular activities kicked off this week! Please note that not all clubs started in week one — if your student is on a waitlist, the school will reach out as spots open up and teacher schedules settle.

Help bring Friday Wellness Days to life! Volunteer during lunch to give Hoover students extra time outdoors. Check the signup for available dates and grade-level time slots.
