Hoover Notes will be sent out weekly to help you keep track of important school community news and events.  New items are bolded.  Links are blue.

PTA Action Items
  1. Thank you to everyone who attended the PTA meeting Thursday.  We announced that the PTA has made safety another priority due to the recent accident where a Hoover student was struck by a vehicle. Thankfully, the student was not seriously injured and has returned to school.  If you are interested in joining the new Safety Committee, please contact Kimberly King at PresidentHooverPTA@gmail.com.
  2. Buy tickets for the PTA's Halloween Party on Thursday, October 26 from 6-8 pm at Hoover.  This party is open to all Hoover students.  Tickets are $15 and are available online under Event Tickets at https://hhmspta.membershiptoolkit.com/. Drinks, Potomac Pizza, and candy will be included in the ticket cost. Questions or interest in volunteering can be sent to anne.glynn@gmail.com.  If students need financial assistance for tickets, contact their school counselor.
  3. Let your student(s) know about the two opportunities to participate in the 2023-2024 National PTA Reflections Art Contest, "I Am Hopeful Because...": entering a theme idea for the 2025-2026 contest (due 11/3) and submitting art for this year's contest (due 11/17).  More details can be found on the PTA's website.
  4. The HHMS NAACP Parents' Council is having their second meeting on 11/7 at 7 pm.  Future dates are listed hereThe purpose of the Parents’ Council is to provide a forum through which interested citizens may offer assistance, guidance, and support to African American parents and students of MCPS to pursue the highest quality education possible through encouragement, information sharing, positive motivation, critical evaluation and advocacy.   5. Drop off extra Halloween candy in the PTA box in the Hoover main office by 11/10.  Some of the candy will be used to create care packages for deployed military personnel and some will be used for treats in classes and after school programs where teachers have specifically requested candy.  
  6. Participate in the next scheduled Spirit Nights on 11/20 at Chipotle (Potomac Village) and 12/6 at Ledo Pizza (Westlake Drive). 
  7. Take a look at the Hoover Staff's Amazon Wishlist.  After school club sponsors have requested snacks.  Items should be delivered to the "Gift Registry Address". Any donations will be greatly appreciated. 
  8. Please consider sponsoring this year's Hoover directory by placing an ad for your business.  Advertising starts as low as $275.  Please reach out to Stephanie Kempter from AtoZ Connect to reserve your spot.  
  9. Join the PTA here. We can't do this without you!

  • Dr. Kim's October Message is available here.  
  • Here are the slides from the 6th Grade Parent Tea, slides from the 7th Grade Parent Tea and the slides from the 8th Grade Parent Tea.
  • Buy yearbooks here.  You can purchase Yearbook Recognition Ads. The flyer has more information.
  • The media center is hosting a Scary Story contest this October. Students can submit their scary story by filling out a google form on the Media Center website.  The entry deadline is 10/27.  
  • Winter registration for boys or girls' basketball opens 10/30 at noon.
  • The Counseling Team will be providing different activities during MCPS' Mental Heath Awareness Week (10/30-11/3). 
  • The 6th Grade Parent/Guardian Outdoor Ed meeting is scheduled for 12/6 from 7-8 pm on Zoom.  
  • Parents can sign up to volunteer at the 7th Grade Finance Park (1/22/23-1/24/23) here. 
  • Spring registration for boys or girls' soccer opens 1/29/24 at noon.
MCPS Community News
  • MCPS Things to Know, Thursday Oct. 19 provides information about the virtual budget forum and upcoming dates, applications to high school programs, opportunity to sign up for Board public comments, bright spots this week and more! 
  • Read the latest edition of MCPS QuickNotes, which includes a calendar of events and MCPS news and information.
  • Provide feedback on the 2024-2025 MCPS Calendar here.
  • The deadline for applying to MCPS' High School Regional/Countywide Programs is Friday, November 3Grade 8 students must use the High School Common Application available on ParentVUE.  Click here for more information.
  • New this year, students may also apply to the Montgomery Virtual Academy (MVA) during the same application period as other special programs.  The MVA has a separate application which can be found in ParentVUE.               
Student Service Learning (SSL)

Student Service Learning is a Maryland state graduation requirement. 75 SSL hours are required to graduate.  For more information and SSL opportunities, visit the MCPS SSL page, the Montgomery County Volunteer Center's website, and the PTA's SSL page.  If you have questions, email Hoover's SSL Coordinator, Mrs. Triantis at Amalia_D_Triantis @mcpsmd.org.
